Biography

A scientist shaped by curiosity and persistence

Andrzej Lech Ruprecht was a Polish zoologist, osteologist, and long-serving researcher at the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża.

Born in Gdańsk in 1935, Andrzej Lech Ruprecht studied biology at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. He joined the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża in 1964, where he worked as a researcher and curator for more than 25 years.

His work focused on mammalian morphology, osteology, faunistics, and bats. He expanded one of Poland’s largest collections of skeletal material, helped prepare major reference works on Polish mammals, and documented the giant noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus, in Poland.

Ruprecht earned his doctorate in 1973 and authored or co-authored roughly 200 scientific and popular publications. After moving to Ciechocinek in 1990, he continued publishing, mentoring researchers, and supporting bat conservation until his death in 2010.
